How EU countries will survive the winter without Russian gas
The European Union is preparing for the winter period without Russian gas supplies through the Ukrainian gas transportation system (GTS). This is because the agreement between Moscow and Kyiv on the transit of "blue fuel" expires on the last day of 2024.
This was reported by Bloomberg.
Thus, on December 16, the EU ministers will meet with the newly elected EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen and discuss how to reduce prices and strengthen the competitiveness of the EU industry as part of the transition to "green energy".
"Energy affordability remains a pressing issue, as volatile prices are driven by geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions and dependence on fossil fuel imports," said Hungary, which will chair the meetings in Brussels as the EU presidency.
At the ministerial meeting, the EU participants will also hear a report from the relevant commission on winterization.
Transit of Russian gas
Ukraine does not plan to supply Russian gas to the European Union through its territory from January 1, 2025. Ukraine's gas transportation system has already been tested for operation under the new conditions and it turned out that the infrastructure is ready for the change.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal is convinced that Ukraine will not have to import fuel during the 2024/2025 heating season. The country will have enough of its own gas reserves for the winter.
We also told you that the Kremlin is already preparing for the fact that it will not be able to supply gas through Ukraine. Moscow no longer doubts that Ukraine will take such a step.
