Can Ukraine make it through winter with its own gas reserves?

Ukraine will have enough of its own gas reserves for the winter. There are no plans to import fuel during the heating season.

This was stated by the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal.

Will Ukraine have enough of its own gas reserves?

"We have enough of our own energy resources for the coming winter," Shmyhal said.

Shmyhal claims that the gas reserves in underground storage facilities are sufficient for the population, district heating companies and budgetary institutions.

"At the same time, when forming the reserves, we also took into account the needs of decentralized gas generation units," the Prime Minister added.

Shmyhal also said that this will be the second heating season in a row when only Ukrainian gas will be used.

What is known about gas reserves in Ukraine

The heating season in Ukraine started in late October. Gas production from underground storage started on November 1.

Ukraine used 6.7 bcm of gas from underground storage facilities during the 2023-2024 heating season. This year, Naftogaz expected approximately the same figures.

For the heating season, Naftogaz intended to accumulate 13.2 billion cubic meters of gas in storage facilities. There is currently no official data on the volume.

As a reminder, with the arrival of cold weather and the start of the heating season, Ukrainians are increasingly concerned about tariffs. In November 2024, the price of natural gas will vary from UAH 7.96 to UAH 19.6 per cubic meter, depending on the type of consumer.

We also wrote that due to the start of the 2024-2025 heating season, Ukrainians will receive higher housing subsidies in November. Most citizens will receive the aid automatically, but some people will have to apply for it personally.
